MarineTLO
is a top-level ontology for the marine domain
(also applicable to the terrestrial domain).
A two-page flyer describing MarineTLO
can be found here.
To tackle the need for having integrated sets of facts about marine species, and thus to assist research about species and biodiversity.
It provides a unified and coherent core model for schema mapping which enables formulating and answering queries which cannot be answered by any individual source.
MarineTLO
is the backbone of the MarineTLO-based Warehouse.
The Information Systems Laboratory (ISL) of FORTH-ICS in the context of the iMarine project using feedback from the partners in iMarine.

Competency Questions
MarineTLO
is used as top model for
FishBase,
WoRMS,
ECOSCOPE,
FLOD and
DBpedia
to support the development of
FactSheetsGenerator applications.
An concrete example is the one provided by IRD (SpeciesFactSheetsGenerator)
aiming at providing factual knowledge about the marine domain
by mashing-up relevant knowledge distributed across several data sources.
MarineTLO
is used as the underlying Knowledge Base
for retrieving more information about a
fish species, water area, country or regional fisheries body.
Specifically, the MarineTLO-based warehouse is queried at real-time,
combining and presenting thereby information coming from different sources.
- For publishing Linked Data related to the marine/terrestrial domain
- For mashing up facts
- For building warehouses

We are interested in both coarse-grained feedback, as well as fine-grained,
e.g. comments and suggestions about the particular elements (concepts, associations, scope notes)
of the ontology.

is a European Commission funded project that kicked-off on 1st Nov 2011.
It is an open and collaborative initiative that will establish a data infrastructure
