What

MarineTLO is a top-level ontology for the marine domain (also applicable to the terrestrial domain).
A two-page flyer describing MarineTLO can be found here.

Why top

To tackle the need for having integrated sets of facts about marine species, and thus to assist research about species and biodiversity.

It provides a unified and coherent core model for schema mapping which enables formulating and answering queries which cannot be answered by any individual source.

MarineTLO is the backbone of the MarineTLO-based Warehouse.

Who top

The Information Systems Laboratory (ISL) of FORTH-ICS in the context of the iMarine project using feedback from the partners in iMarine.

Current Applications top
MarineTLO-based Warehouse
It is a warehouse which integrates information coming from FishBase, WoRMS, ECOSCOPE, FLOD and DBpedia. It currently contains information (≈ 5.5M triples) about marine species (≈ 54,000), ecosystems, water areas, vessels, etc. The warehouse is already in use by various services offered by iMarine and it keeps evolving. A list of rules for creating sameAs links using the SILK framework can be found here. A figure illustrating the results of the connectivity metrics for the warehouse can be found here. A 3D Visualization of the connectivity metrics of the warehouse can be found here.

Fact Sheet Generator
In this case, MarineTLO is used as top model for FishBase, WoRMS, ECOSCOPE, FLOD and DBpedia to support the development of FactSheetsGenerator applications. An concrete example is the one provided by IRD (SpeciesFactSheetsGenerator) aiming at providing factual knowledge about the marine domain by mashing-up relevant knowledge distributed across several data sources.
Semantic Post-Processing of the results of keyword search queries
X-Search is a meta-search system that performs (at real-time) entity mining and textual clustering over the top results and also exploits the availability of semantic repositories for enriching the identified entities. In this case, MarineTLO is used as the underlying Knowledge Base for retrieving more information about a fish species, water area, country or regional fisheries body. Specifically, the MarineTLO-based warehouse is queried at real-time, combining and presenting thereby information coming from different sources.
