Overview of Signal Processing Research at Technion's Signal and Image Processing Lab (SIPL)

Speaker:
Prof. David Malah,
Department of Electrical Engineering, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology
Date:
Friday, 10 September 2010
Time:
15:00-16:00
Location:
"Alkiviades C. Payatakes" Seminar Room, FORTH, Heraklion, Crete
Host:
Yannis Stylianou

Abstract:
In this talk an overview of SIPL and its research activities in the area of multimedia signal processing will be presented. Emphasis will be put on research by the speaker and his students on the following topics:
  • Speech Processing: Speech coding; Bandwidth extension of telephone speech; Text-to-Speech (TTS) synthesis.
  • Audio Processing: Audio coding; Packet-loss Concealment.
  • Image Processing: Image enhancement; 2D and 3D object fitting and classification. Multiple Description (MD) coding.
  • Video Processing: Transrating; Coding-domain processing; Reversed-complexity coding; ROI-based adaptation of video to mobile devices.
Demonstrations will be included, where applicable.

Bio:
David Malah received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in 1964 and 1967, respectively, from the Technion -Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel, and the PhD degree in 1971 from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, all in Electrical Engineering. In 1972 he joined the Technion, where he is an Elron-Elbit Professor of Electrical Engineering. During the period 1979 to 2001 he spent about 6 years, cumulatively, of sabbaticals and summer leaves at AT\&T Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ, and AT\&T Labs, Florham Park, NJ, conducting research in the areas of Speech and Image Communication and the summer of 2004 at the Georgia Centers for Advanced Telecommunications Technology - GCATT, working in the area of Video Processing. Since 1975 he has been the academic head of the Signal and Image Processing Laboratory (SIPL), at the Technion, which is active in Image/Video and Speech/Audio Processing research and education. From 1/2006 to 3/2010 he served as the Director of the Center for Communication and Information Technologies - CCIT, at the EE Department, Technion. He has been on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Visual Communication and Image representation since 1999, and as of this year he is on the Senior Editorial Board of IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal processing. He became a Fellow of the IEEE in 1987 and since 2009 he is a Life Fellow of the IEEE. He is a recipient of the 2007 International IBM Faculty Award.
His main research interests are in Image, Video, Speech and Audio Coding; Speech, Image, and Video Analysis; Text to Speech Synthesis, and in Digital Signal Processing Techniques.
